Gunkanjima can be literally translated as a warship island actually resembles a warship from distance! This is a small island located in the southwest of Nagasaki prefecture. Originally this island was deserted but as coal was found in 1810, it developed into a coal mine and a complete city. There were many modern buildings built for worker’s families, around 5000 people lived here at peak. Although no one lives there anymore, the ruins of those modern buildings still provide a great scenery!
