Since the establishment of the building in 1888, the residents of Sapporo have been familiar with the name Akarenga, or literally translated to as “Red Bricks”. It resembles the octagonal dome from the Massachusetts State House in the United States of America.
The Meiji Government was in charge of this site. It was an important symbol as the building was considered the largest at the time which stood for the development of Hokkaido. The building remains as a significant cultural property of the country as of now. You can enjoy your time in a small museum on the second floor where there are exhibitions of Sapporo and Hokkaido memorials
