CITY GUIDE: Kumamoto City (熊本市)


Kumamoto City (熊本市) is the capital Of Kumamoto Prefecture and a historically rich city of Japan. It is situated on the island of Kyushu in Japan. Kumamoto is place with shrines, temples, castles and stunning gardens.

Kumamoto Castle is a famous tourist spot. Known for its reputation of never being successfully attacked, the castle was built by experts brought by Lord Kato Kiyomasa (who was famous for building stone walls). As such, the most attractive feature of this castle is its stone walls.

Next stop for tourists is Suizen-ji Joju-en. It’s a beautiful garden,  situated next to Suizenji Temple. Other than that, Takahashi Inari Shrine is a must visit too.

Kumamoto caters tourists with all type of tour spots and fun activities. A culturally rich spot like Kumamoto Prefectural Museum of Art is a place that stores masterpieces of Japanese history. Kumamoto Prefectural Theater offers an experience that one should not miss.

Also, Kumamoto has its own mascot. If you have heard of Kumamon, he’s the black bear with red cheeks.
